Short answer: AI assistants recommend businesses they can clearly understand and trust. To appear in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, make sure your website gives direct, well-structured answers, your business details are identical everywhere online, you have genuine reviews and mentions on other websites, and AI crawlers are allowed to read your site. This is often called generative engine optimisation (GEO) or answer engine optimisation (AEO).
How AI search engines choose what to show
AI assistants usually combine two things:
- What the model already knows from its training data — mentions of your brand across the web.
- What it finds in a live search — many assistants search the web in real time and cite the pages they use.
Different assistants use different search sources. Google AI Overviews and Gemini draw on Google's index. Microsoft Copilot uses Bing, and ChatGPT search also draws on Bing among other sources. Perplexity runs its own crawler. So being well indexed in both Google and Bing matters more than ever.
1. Write answer-first content
AI systems prefer passages they can quote cleanly.
- Start pages and sections with a one- or two-sentence direct answer.
- Use question-style headings that match how people ask ("How much does an e-commerce website cost in India?").
- Use short paragraphs, bullet lists and numbered steps.
- Include specific facts: prices, timelines, locations, years of experience, numbers.
- Add an FAQ section to important pages.
2. Use structured data (schema)
Schema markup tells machines exactly what your content means. Useful types include Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BlogPosting, BreadcrumbList, Product and Review. Keep schema accurate and matching what is visible on the page.
3. Make your business a clear "entity"
AI models connect facts about a business across the web. Help them:
- Use the same name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
- Have a detailed About page: founding year, locations, services, team and achievements.
- Link your official social profiles from your website (and vice versa).
- Describe what you do in the same clear words everywhere.
4. Earn mentions on other websites
Assistants trust businesses that other sources talk about. Aim for:
- Reviews on Google and industry platforms (Clutch, GoodFirms, JustDial, IndiaMART and similar)
- Listings in "best companies" roundups and directories
- Mentions in local news, industry blogs, podcasts and forums
- Case studies published together with clients
5. Let AI crawlers read your site
Check your robots.txt does not block search and AI crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Many sites block them accidentally through security plugins or CDN settings. Some businesses also publish an llms.txt file — a short plain-text summary of the company and its key pages for AI tools.
6. Get indexed in Bing quickly
Verify your website in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and use IndexNow to notify Bing instantly when you publish or update pages. This helps your fresh content reach the assistants that rely on Bing.
7. Keep information fresh
AI answers often favour recently updated pages for topics like prices and "best of" lists. Review your key pages every few months and update years, prices and examples.
8. Track your AI visibility
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and note who gets recommended.
- Check referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com in Google Analytics.
- Watch Search Console for impressions on long, conversational queries.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO builds on SEO. The foundations are the same — crawlable, fast, trustworthy pages with helpful content. GEO adds more focus on direct answers, structured data, brand mentions and making sure AI crawlers and Bing can access your content.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Some platforms are testing ads, but being recommended in normal answers depends on how clearly and widely your business is described across trusted sources.
Does llms.txt help ranking?
It is a newer, optional convention and no major assistant has confirmed it as a ranking factor. It is cheap to add and gives AI tools a clean summary, so we include it on the websites we build.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Live-search assistants can cite a new page within days of it being indexed. Becoming a brand that assistants recommend without a search usually takes months of consistent reviews, mentions and content.
