Short answer: to rank #1 on Google you need a page that answers the searcher's question better than anyone else, on a fast and technically healthy website, backed by trust signals such as reviews, real experience and links from other reputable websites. Most businesses can reach page one for local and niche keywords in 3–6 months; highly competitive national keywords can take a year or more.
We have been doing SEO for businesses since 2015. This is the practical process we use — no tricks, just what consistently works.
Step 1: Pick keywords you can actually win
Ranking #1 for "website design" across India is extremely hard. Ranking #1 for "website designing company in Janakpuri" or "PAN card portal software" is very achievable. Start where competition is lower and buyer intent is high.
- Local keywords: service + city or area ("SEO company in Gurugram")
- Long-tail keywords: specific needs ("e-commerce website with GST invoice")
- Question keywords: "how much does an app cost in India"
- Commercial keywords: "best", "price", "near me", "company", "services"
Use Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner and the "People also ask" box to find these phrases.
Step 2: Match search intent
Search the keyword yourself and look at the top results. Google is telling you what it thinks people want:
- Lists and guides → people want information
- Service pages → people want to hire someone
- Product pages → people want to buy
- Map results → people want a nearby business
If the top ten are all price guides, a sales page will struggle. Create the type of page Google is already rewarding — then make it better.
Step 3: Get on-page SEO right
- Put the main keyword in the title tag, ideally near the start, and keep it under about 60 characters.
- Write a meta description that sells the click — it does not directly affect rankings, but it affects click-through.
- Use one clear H1 and logical H2/H3 sub-headings.
- Answer the main question in the first paragraph.
- Use descriptive, short URLs (/seo-services, not /page?id=12).
- Add internal links from related pages using natural anchor text.
- Compress images and add alt text that describes the image.
Step 4: Fix technical SEO
Great content cannot rank if Google cannot crawl it or users leave because it is slow.
- Mobile-first: Google indexes the mobile version of your site.
- Speed: aim for good Core Web Vitals — fast loading (LCP), responsive interaction (INP) and no layout jumps (CLS).
- HTTPS on every page.
- XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
- No broken links or redirect chains.
- Canonical tags to avoid duplicate pages competing with each other.
- Structured data (schema) for your organisation, services, FAQs, articles and reviews.
Step 5: Create content that deserves to rank
Google's guidance is clear: create helpful, reliable, people-first content. It looks for E-E-A-T — experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust.
- Show real experience: your own photos, case studies, numbers and examples.
- Cover the topic completely, including the follow-up questions people ask.
- Keep pages updated — prices, years and screenshots.
- Name the people or company behind the content and make it easy to contact you.
Step 6: Build authority with backlinks
Links from other trusted websites are still one of the strongest ranking signals. Good sources include:
- Business directories and listings (with consistent name, address and phone)
- Industry associations and chambers of commerce
- Client websites ("Website by" credit links)
- Local news, guest articles and podcasts
- Useful tools, guides or data that others want to reference
Avoid buying cheap link packages. Spammy links can do more harm than good.
Step 7: Win the local pack with Google Business Profile
For "near me" and city searches, the map results often appear above normal results. Complete every field of your Google Business Profile, choose the right category, add photos, post updates and — most importantly — earn genuine reviews regularly. Read our local SEO checklist for the full list.
Step 8: Prepare for AI Overviews and AI search
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity now answer many questions directly. They tend to cite pages that give clear, direct, well-structured answers from trusted sources. Learn how in our guide to AI search optimisation.
Step 9: Measure and improve
Track impressions, clicks, average position and enquiries in Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Every month, improve pages that rank on positions 4–15 — they are the quickest wins.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank #1 on Google?
For local and long-tail keywords, many businesses see page-one rankings in 3–6 months. Competitive national keywords can take 6–12 months or more, depending on competition and your website's authority.
Can anyone guarantee a #1 ranking?
No. Google's algorithm is not controlled by any agency, and Google itself warns against companies that guarantee rankings. A good SEO partner guarantees the work and transparent reporting, not a position.
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
They work best together. Ads bring traffic immediately while you pay; SEO takes longer but keeps bringing free traffic. Most businesses start ads for quick leads and invest in SEO for long-term growth.
Do I need a new website to rank?
Not always. Many sites rank after fixing speed, structure and content. If your site is very slow, not mobile-friendly or built on a platform that blocks SEO, a rebuild is usually cheaper in the long run.
