Short answer: Google's AI Overviews (the AI summary at the top of results) and AI Mode (the chat-style search tab) answer many questions without a click, so informational pages are losing traffic. You cannot switch them off, but you can get cited inside them, focus on searches that still lead to clicks (local, product and "near me" searches), and measure leads and sales, not just visits.

  • AI Overviews show an AI-written summary above the normal results, with a few linked sources.
  • AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience. Users ask follow-up questions and often never see the classic blue links.
  • The classic ten results are still there — but they now sit lower on the page for many queries.

Industry studies in 2026 report AI Overviews on roughly half of tracked US searches, and higher rates for question-style searches. Exact numbers vary by study, country and industry.

How much traffic are websites losing?

Reported drops vary widely. Studies and publisher reports in 2026 range from around 18% to over 60% fewer clicks on pages where an AI Overview appears, and AI Mode sessions are reported to end without any click in the large majority of cases.

But the picture is not all bad:

  • Brands cited inside an AI Overview are reported to get noticeably more clicks than brands that are not cited.
  • Many AI Mode citations come from pages outside the traditional top 10, so smaller sites have a real chance.
  • Local, commercial and transactional searches ("website designer in Noida", "buy kurta online") still send a lot of clicks.

Which pages are hit hardest?

  1. Simple definitions and facts — "what is SEO", "GST full form". Google can answer these in one line.
  2. Generic how-to articles that repeat what every other site says.
  3. Listicles with no original experience, data or opinion.

Pages that hold up better:

  • Service and product pages with prices, reviews and a clear way to buy or enquire
  • Local pages tied to a Google Business Profile
  • Original data, case studies, tools, calculators and comparisons
  • Content with real experience — photos, screenshots, step-by-step results

9 steps to protect your traffic and leads

1. Find out which pages lost clicks

In Google Search Console, compare the last 3 months with the same period last year. Look for pages where impressions stayed the same but clicks fell — that pattern usually means an AI answer is taking the click.

2. Answer the question in the first 2–3 lines

AI systems pick clear, direct answers. Start important pages with a short answer, then go deeper. (This article does it too.)

3. Target full questions people actually ask

Searches are getting longer and more conversational. Add sections that answer real questions — "how much does a website cost for a small shop in India?" — and use an FAQ section with genuine questions from customers.

4. Add what AI cannot copy

Your prices, your process, your photos, your results, your customer stories. First-hand experience is exactly what Google says it wants, and it is what makes people click to read more.

5. Build your brand and entity signals

Keep your business name, address and phone the same everywhere. Get mentioned on trusted sites, directories and news. A strong link building profile and good reviews help Google trust and cite you.

6. Use structured data

Add schema for your organisation, products, FAQs, reviews and articles. It helps search engines understand your page — and is part of AI search optimization.

7. Double down on local and commercial searches

"Near me" and service searches still drive calls and visits. Optimise your Google Business Profile and local SEO.

8. Turn visitors into leads

With fewer visits, each one matters more. Add WhatsApp buttons, clear calls to action, quick enquiry forms and fast-loading pages.

9. Measure leads, not just traffic

A page may get fewer visits but the same number of enquiries, because the people who click now are more ready to buy. Track form fills, calls and WhatsApp chats in Google Analytics.

Should you block Google's AI from your site?

Usually no. Blocking AI features also limits how your content can appear in AI answers, and you lose the chance to be cited. For most businesses, being the cited source is better than being invisible.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode still rely on web pages to build their answers, and classic results still get most commercial clicks. SEO is changing — from "rank and get the click" to "be the trusted source, everywhere". Read our full AI search optimization guide and how to increase website traffic for more.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google AI Overviews?

An AI-generated summary that appears at the top of some Google results, combining information from several websites and linking to a few of them as sources.

What is Google AI Mode?

A conversational search mode in Google where you can ask complex questions and follow-ups. It gives a long AI answer with source links instead of a standard list of results.

Why has my website traffic dropped in 2026?

Common reasons are AI Overviews answering the query on the results page, a Google core or spam update, or technical problems. Check Search Console: if impressions are steady but clicks fell, AI answers are the likely cause. If rankings fell too, read our Google spam update recovery guide.

How do I get my website cited in AI Overviews?

Give clear, direct answers, add original experience and data, use structured data, keep your pages fast and indexable, and build trust through reviews and mentions on other sites.

Can I turn off AI Overviews for my website?

Google offers controls such as nosnippet, but they also reduce how your page appears in normal results. For most businesses it is better to aim to be cited.
