Short answer: On 28 October 2026, Google announced it is scaling ads in AI Mode to India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Ads appear inside AI Mode answers, clearly labelled “Sponsored”. Brazil, Mexico and the UK follow in Q4 2026. To be ready, focus on broad, intent-rich keywords, strong product feeds, clear landing pages and good conversion tracking.

What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google's conversational search tab. Instead of ten blue links, people ask long questions ("best 2 BHK in Pune under 80 lakh near a metro station with a gym") and get an AI-written answer with links. Google says AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches.
Until now, AI Mode ads were mostly a US experience. With this update, Indian searchers will start seeing sponsored results inside AI Mode answers.
What do AI Mode ads look like?
- Ads are clearly labelled "Sponsored" and appear within or below the AI answer.
- Google's examples show sponsored product listings (shopping-style cards with image and price) next to organic product results.
- Google says click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode are similar, based on its US data.
- In the US, Google is also launching "multiturn" ads, which can appear in follow-up questions in the same conversation.
Google says it will keep testing new formats, so expect changes over the next few months.
Why this matters for Indian businesses
- New ad space: AI Mode usage is growing fast. Google's CEO said query growth is the highest in five years.
- Longer, high-intent searches: people describe exactly what they need, so ads can match deeper intent (budget, location, features).
- Less organic space: when an AI answer and sponsored results take the top of the page, fewer people scroll to normal listings. Being visible in AI answers, organically or through ads, becomes more important.
- Early advantage: competition and costs are often lower when a new placement launches.
7 steps to get your ads ready for AI Mode
1. Check your campaign settings
Google's help article lists which campaign types are eligible. In general, AI-led formats favour Performance Max, Shopping and AI-driven Search campaigns. If you only run tightly limited exact-match keywords, your ads may not match long conversational questions. Check the Google Ads help page on ads in AI Mode for the latest eligibility.
2. Use broader, intent-based keywords
People ask full questions. Add broad match or AI-led keyword expansion with good negative keywords, so your ads can match "which CA in Gurugram can file GST returns for a small shop" and not just "CA Gurugram".
3. Fix your product feed (for e-commerce)
Sponsored product cards depend on your Google Merchant Center feed. Use clear titles, all key attributes (size, colour, material), good images, correct prices and stock.
4. Write ads and landing pages that answer questions
AI Mode answers detailed needs, so your landing page should too: price, features, delivery, FAQs and trust signals above the fold. Pages that match the question convert better and improve ad quality.
5. Track real conversions
AI-driven bidding needs data. Set up conversion tracking for calls, WhatsApp clicks, forms and purchases, and import offline sales where possible.
6. Watch your search terms and budget
Performance from AI surfaces is mixed into your normal reports. Review search terms weekly, add negatives, and watch cost per lead for the first 30 days.
7. Don't ignore organic AI visibility
Ads are only half the story. Get your website cited in AI answers with clear, factual, well-structured pages. See our guide on Google AI search link changes and AI search optimization.
Which businesses benefit most?
- E-commerce stores with good product feeds (fashion, electronics, home, beauty)
- Local services answering detailed questions (clinics, coaching, real estate, CA firms)
- Travel and education, where people compare options in long queries
- B2B companies whose buyers research in depth
Note: ads in some sensitive categories may have extra restrictions. Check Google's policies for your industry.
