Short answer: on 15 October 2026, Google announced five changes that show more website links in AI Overviews and AI Mode: inline links higher in answers, a test section for official sites, wider news and Preferred Sources carousels, larger thumbnail links at the end of answers, and a test of clickable creator and publisher names on video results. To benefit, your pages need to be the clearest, most trusted answer on the topic.
Last updated: 30 October 2026. Some changes are tests and may not appear for every user or country.
The 5 changes Google announced
- Inline links appear higher — links inside the AI-written text show up earlier and more often, right where a topic is mentioned.
- Official site section (test) — a dedicated area near the top of some answers linking to official destinations, such as a brand's own site or a government page for a task.
- Wider news carousels — carousels with timely articles and Preferred Sources expanded to more regions and languages.
- Bigger related links — larger thumbnail cards for related articles at the end of some answers.
- Creator and publisher names (test) — clickable names on some AI Mode video results that lead to Search profiles.
Google also says use of Preferred Sources — where people choose news sites they want to see more of — has grown sharply.
What this means for your traffic
It is good news, with limits. More visible links mean more chances to be clicked, but AI answers still satisfy many searches without a click. Early reports have not shown clear traffic gains yet.
The real shift: being cited is the new ranking. If Google uses your page to build its answer, your link sits right inside it. If not, you are below the AI answer — or invisible. We explained the bigger picture in AI Overviews & AI Mode: why traffic is dropping.
7 steps to get your website linked in AI answers
1. Answer first, then explain
Start key pages with a 2–3 line direct answer. AI systems quote clear, self-contained statements.
2. Make your official pages unmistakable
For brand and "how to do X with [your business]" searches, Google is testing official site sections. Keep your business name, address, contact details and service pages consistent everywhere, add Organization and LocalBusiness schema, and keep your Google Business Profile complete.
3. Cover the follow-up questions
AI Mode answers chains of questions. Add sections and FAQs for the next three questions a customer would ask.
4. Add original information
Prices, process, examples, photos, data and real experience give Google a reason to cite you instead of a generic page.
5. Use good thumbnails
The new thumbnail cards reward pages with a clear, relevant featured image (at least 1200 px wide), set as the Open Graph image and in Article schema.
6. Earn Preferred Source status
If you publish news or updates, ask loyal readers to add your site as a Preferred Source in Google — a link on your site or newsletter can make it a one-tap action.
7. Build trust signals
Mentions on respected sites, reviews and quality backlinks help Google trust your pages. See our link building service.
How to measure it
- In Search Console, watch clicks and impressions for your top question-style pages week by week.
- Look at the separate report for generative AI features where available.
- Track leads and calls, not only visits — AI-referred visitors often arrive ready to act.
