1. Suggested edits go live faster

When a customer (or competitor) suggests a change to your hours, phone, address or category, you now have about 4 days to accept or reject it before it may be applied.

What to do: turn on email and app notifications in your Business Profile, and check the "Google updates" section every week. Reject wrong edits immediately.

2. Posts with unverified contact details may be removed

Google Posts (offers, updates, events) that contain phone numbers or contact details that are not verified on your profile may be taken down.

What to do: use only the phone number and website already on your verified profile inside posts. Don't add personal mobile numbers or third-party links.

3. Spam review alerts by email

Owners reported emails from Google when it detects an unusual spike in fake reviews. Google typically removes the suspicious reviews.

What to do: never buy reviews or use "review swaps". Ask real customers using a Google review QR code and follow our guide on how to get more Google reviews.

4. New policy: misuse of support channels

Google added a policy against abusing Business Profile support, for example repeated false reinstatement requests or misleading claims to support staff.

What to do: contact support only with accurate information and real documents. Repeated misuse can hurt your account.

5. Sign in to read all reviews (spotted)

Some users report Google Maps asking them to sign in to read all reviews. This is not officially announced. It doesn't change your rating, but your most recent and top reviews matter even more, since they're what non-signed-in users see first.

6. Advertising and solicitation rules rewritten

Google rewrote its rules on advertising and solicitation in Business Profile content, with a new section for merchants. Content that pushes unrelated offers, spammy promotions or misleading claims can be removed.

What to do: keep posts, product descriptions and Q&A relevant to your own business. No keyword stuffing in your business name.

7. WhatsApp button in the local panel (spotted)

Some profiles show a WhatsApp button in the local panel on Google Search, so customers can message directly. It's not officially announced and may be a test.

What to do: add your WhatsApp chat in the profile's contact options where available. Make sure someone replies fast, or use a WhatsApp Business API chatbot.

8. September 2026 spam update finished

Google's spam update rolled out from 24 September to 8 October 2026. It was a normal, global update. Sites and listings using spam tactics may have lost visibility. If your traffic dropped, read our Google spam update recovery guide.
