Short answer: In early November 2026, Google started showing AI Overviews in the right-hand panel for many brand searches (where the knowledge panel used to be). Google is also testing removing the AI Mode button from the search bar for some users. In October, Google officially told site owners to fact-check all AI-generated content, warned against fake author profiles, and added multi-country filters in Search Console. The next core update hasn't started yet. Your brand's About page, Google Business Profile and reviews now matter more than ever.

1. AI Overviews move to the right panel for brand searches
When people search a brand name on desktop (for example, a company or product name), Google is now showing an AI Overview in the right-hand column for many queries. Before, the right side usually showed the knowledge panel (logo, address, social profiles, reviews). SEOs say Google is effectively replacing brand knowledge panels with AI summaries.
Why it matters: the first thing a customer reads about your business may now be an AI summary of what the web says about you, not your own details. If that summary is wrong or outdated, you can lose the customer before they reach your website.
What to do:
- Search your brand name (and "brand name + reviews", "brand name + price") on desktop and note what the AI Overview says.
- Make your About page crystal clear: who you are, where you are, since when, what you do, prices or price ranges, and contact details.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and correct. AI summaries often reuse it.
- Collect fresh reviews that mention your services. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Fix wrong details wherever they appear: directories, old press mentions, social bios.
2. Google is testing removing the AI Mode button
Some users report that the AI Mode button is missing from the Google search bar, especially in incognito. It was added in May 2025. Google hasn't announced anything, and it looks like a small test.
What it means for you: nothing to change yet. AI Mode traffic is still small for most Indian businesses. Keep optimising for both classic results and AI answers with our AI search optimization guide.
3. Official: fact-check all AI-generated content
On 1 October 2026, Google updated its guidance on using generative AI content. It now says site owners should "manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing, because AI can make mistakes (hallucinations).
AI content is still allowed. What Google punishes is unhelpful, inaccurate or mass-produced content. Read our full guide: Google's AI content rules in 2026.
4. Official: no fake authors or AI headshots
On 6 October 2026, Google added a warning to its helpful content guide against deceptive authorship: made-up names, AI-generated headshots and false credentials. Google says any deception makes a page untrustworthy to users and to its ranking systems.
What to do: use real names and real photos on author bios. If a post is written by your team, say so ("7StartUp Editorial Team") instead of inventing a person.
5. Search Console: compare several countries at once
Since 6 October 2026, the Performance report lets you select more than one country in the filter and see their combined traffic. Useful if you serve India plus the UAE, UK or US.
Try it: Search Console → Performance → + Add filter → Country → tick several countries.
6. Performance Max may skip brand searches
Google's Ads help documentation now says Performance Max may filter out navigational and brand searches so that your Search campaigns handle them. If you rely only on PMax, check whether your brand search traffic dropped, and consider a small, cheap brand Search campaign. See Google Ads in AI Mode.
7. September 2026 spam update finished, core update awaited
The September 2026 spam update finished in October. SEOs saw several unconfirmed ranking swings since then and expect a core update before the year ends. If your traffic dropped, follow our spam update recovery guide.
Your 15-minute checklist for this week

- Check your Google Business Profile: hours, phone, category, photos.
- Replace any fake or stock author photos with real ones, or use a team byline.
- Review AI-written blog posts for wrong facts, old prices and outdated dates.
- In Search Console, compare your main countries with the new filter.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Google showing an AI Overview instead of my knowledge panel?
For many brand searches on desktop, Google now shows an AI Overview in the right-hand panel. Google hasn't announced it officially. Make sure your website, Google Business Profile and reviews give accurate information, because the summary is built from them.
Can I edit the AI Overview about my business?
No, you can't edit it directly. You can improve it by publishing clear, accurate facts on your website and profiles, and by using the feedback option under the AI Overview to report wrong information.
Is Google removing AI Mode?
There's no announcement. Some users don't see the AI Mode button in a small test. AI Mode is still available for most users.
Does Google penalise AI-written content?
No. Google penalises unhelpful, inaccurate or spammy content, however it was made. Its guidance now asks you to fact-check and review all AI-generated content before publishing.
